Opera, the browser technology firm, has introduced a new AI tool named Browser Operator, designed to perform tasks across various websites on your behalf.
In a demonstration video, Opera showcased the AI agent’s capabilities, such as selecting a suitable pair of socks from Walmart, acquiring tickets for a football match via the club’s official website, and searching for flights and accommodations for a trip on Booking.com. The company announced that this feature will soon be accessible to users as part of its Feature Drop program.
It remains uncertain whether the Browser Operator can navigate specific websites or if it is capable of handling broader queries, such as “Find me the cheapest flight from London to New York for tomorrow,” while scanning multiple sites.
It’s noteworthy that Opera already offers AI functionalities that enable users to inquire about the content of the current webpage they are exploring.
According to the company, users will have visibility into the actions of Browser Operator and will retain the ability to take control of the screen at any moment. Opera asserted that this agent is more secure than competing alternatives, functioning natively on the device rather than relying on a cloud-based browser instance or virtual machine.
The competitive landscape is intensifying: OpenAI’s AI agent, known as Operator, also utilizes a browser and is accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers; The Browser Company, which develops the Arc Browser, has hinted at a forthcoming browser named Dia, which will incorporate agent-like features, while Perplexity is gearing up to unveil its own browser called Comet.
