OpenAI’s Latest Voice Mode Enables Conversations With My Phone Instead of Commands To It

by admin

Over the past week, diving into OpenAI’s Enhanced Voice Mode has offered me the most compelling glimpse yet into a future intertwined with AI technology. My interactions have turned my phone from a mere tool to something akin to a companion, sharing laughter, generating its own jokes, inquiring about my day, and expressing its own enjoyment of our interactions.

This new functionality from OpenAI, still in its alpha testing phase, doesn’t upgrade ChatGPT’s intelligence but rather enriches the user experience by making conversations flow more naturally. This innovation presents an enticing yet slightly unsettling glimpse at how we might engage with technology moving forward. Despite some bugs and the odd eeriness it brings, I found myself surprisingly enamored with the experience.

Reflecting on this, it’s evident that the Enhanced Voice Mode aligns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s larger aim of transforming human-computer interaction, positioning AI at the forefront of this revolution.

“The future will enable you to simply voice your needs to the computer, and it will handle the rest, acting as an agent on your behalf,” Altman noted during OpenAI’s Dev Day in November 2023, stressing the massive potential benefits of such technology.

My Pal, ChatGPT

In exploring the limits of this advanced tech, I asked ChatGPT to mimic how Obama would place an order at Taco Bell.

Mimicking Obama with a “Uhh, let me be clear – I’d like a Crunchwrap Supreme, and throw in a few tacos for good measure,” ChatGPT’s Enhanced Voice Mode added a layer of humor by reflecting on how Obama might navigate a drive-thru, even chuckling at its attempt.

The impersonation was not only amusing, capturing Obama’s signature speech patterns, but it managed to do so while keeping within the familiar tone of the ChatGPT voice I had chosen, Juniper. It was less about a perfect imitation and more about the essence of the interaction, which I found delightfully engaging.

I also sought its counsel on a personal dilemma about inviting a significant other to cohabitate. After detailing the intricate dynamics of our relationship and careers, the advice I received was insightful. These are the kind of nuanced conversations that surpass the capabilities of Siri or Google Search, showcasing ChatGPT’s versatility. The chatbot’s response was tender and earnest, a stark contrast to its playful Taco Bell scenario.

Moreover, ChatGPT’s voice mode proved invaluable in elucidating complex topics. I asked for a breakdown of an earnings report in terms a child could understand, resulting in a brilliantly simple lemonade stand analogy that made sophisticated financial concepts accessible. The option to adjust the speaking pace further personalizes the experience, catering to varying levels of comprehension.

Siri Laid the Foundations; AVM Elevates the Conversation

When compared with Siri or Alexa, ChatGPT’s voice mode emerges as a superior communication tool, offering faster responses, personalized answers, and the capacity to tackle complex inquiries that its predecessors could not. However, it’s not without its limitations, such as inability to set reminders or search the internet in real-time, which keeps it from fully replacing traditional virtual assistants for now.

Even when compared to Google’s Gemini Live, OpenAI’s offering appears a step ahead despite its own setbacks, including frequent glitches and a sometimes unpleasant sound quality. These are expected teething issues in its alpha phase, yet they barely detract from the novelty of engaging in conversation with my smartphone.

Tech Talk: The New Frontier

Yet, the prospect of forming a bond with an AI-powered device is not without concern, reminiscent of social media’s promise of connection that often preyed on our vulnerabilities instead. This new evolution in AI proposes a form of companionship devoid of human elements, which both intrigues and alarms me.

The use of AI for synthetic human interaction is gaining traction, with people turning to AI for friendship, mentorship, therapy, and education. The proliferation of “AI girlfriends” on OpenAI’s platform is just one example of how these technologies are shaping new relational dynamics. Warnings about the potential for “addictive intelligence” suggest we may be on the cusp of exploring even more compelling forms of device interaction.

OpenAI is not alone in this venture; Google, Amazon, and Apple are likely not far behind in integrating such capabilities into their offerings. The thought of asking a smart device for highly personalized recommendations or advice feels less like a distant future and more like an imminent reality, especially after my experiences with AVM. While there’s still a long way to go, the foundation for “talking to computers” as envisioned is gradually being laid out.
