OpenAI Removes Diversity Commitment Page from Its Website

by admin

OpenAI has removed a section from its website that previously showcased its dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The link “https://openai.com/commitment-to-dei/” now redirects visitors to “https://openai.com/building-dynamic-teams/,” a page that discusses individuals with “different backgrounds” but does not mention the term “diversity.”

The prior content emphasized the company’s “ongoing investment in diversity, equity, and inclusion.” It conveyed a serious commitment to perpetually enhancing efforts to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, as captured by the Internet Archive and referenced in a CNN article from 2023.

The exact timing of this change is uncertain, but indications suggest it occurred quite recently. The DEI commitment webpage was referenced as accessible in a story by ABC News published on January 22. By January 27, OpenAI had launched the new page titled “Building Dynamic Teams.”

The updated page states, “At OpenAI, we believe the best ideas emerge when they are scrutinized, debated, and refined by individuals with a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We foster a culture of curiosity where ideas can be questioned — not simply accepted.”

OpenAI has not provided a prompt response to inquiries regarding these website modifications or whether they signify any changes to internal procedures. Notably, OpenAI’s webpage that promises “fairness” in its model training to mitigate social biases remains active.

OpenAI is not the only firm reevaluating its connection to DEI terminology, as both the language and the underlying principles face significant political and legal scrutiny. Recently, Attorney General Pam Bondi directed the Department of Justice to “investigate, eliminate, and penalize” DEI initiatives viewed as unlawful within private organizations that receive federal funding.

Over the past month, major companies such as Meta, Google, and Amazon have declared adjustments or terminations to their DEI strategies, with the latter two removing references to diversity and inclusion from their recent 10-K filings.

OpenAI is collaborating with the government in various roles. For instance, it has obtained a government contract and introduced a chatbot for government agencies.
