OpenAI has made a notable entry into the media space by acquiring TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a popular talk show centred around technology and business. This marks OpenAI’s first venture into owning a media entity, with the show’s operations reporting to Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief political officer.
Hosted by former tech entrepreneurs John Coogan and Jordi Hays, TBPN is a daily live programme broadcast on platforms such as YouTube and X, lasting three hours each episode. The show has cultivated a dedicated following, particularly among Silicon Valley insiders, providing a candid platform for discussions among influential figures in the tech sector, including CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella. Often compared to a “SportsCenter” for the tech industry, TBPN offers a venue for industry leaders to discuss current events and share opinions.
As part of the acquisition, TBPN will maintain its identity and brand, with OpenAI planning to support its growth. Notably, the show is on track to generate over $30 million in revenue this year, demonstrating its success in the tech commentary landscape.
OpenAI already produces a podcast featuring long-form discussions with its own team. However, TBPN’s founders bring valuable communication and marketing expertise that OpenAI intends to leverage beyond the show’s content. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of AGI deployment, emphasised that TBPN will help bridge the gap in understanding how artificial intelligence impacts daily life, especially important for a unique company like OpenAI.
Despite the acquisition, TBPN will retain its editorial autonomy, allowing the team to choose guests and dictate programming decisions. Nonetheless, the move raises questions, given OpenAI’s influential position in AI and the nature of TBPN’s discussions, which often include critiques of both OpenAI and its rivals. Once the deal is finalised, TBPN will operate within OpenAI’s strategic team under Lehane, a figure known for executing intricate political strategies, including campaigns in the cryptocurrency sector.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed confidence that this acquisition will not alter TBPN’s critical perspectives on the company, reassuring that the show will maintain its integrity. Altman noted in a social media post that he anticipates ongoing honest commentary, even if it includes critique, helping OpenAI remain accountable to the public.
Hays, representing TBPN, remarked that the acquisition presents an opportunity to transition from mere commentary to having a tangible impact on how AI technologies are perceived and utilized globally, reinforcing their commitment to fostering a responsible dialogue around this transformative technology.
