OpenAI Indicates Possible Retention of Deleted Operator Data for Up to 90 Days

by admin

According to OpenAI, the company may retain chat logs and corresponding screenshots from users of its AI tool known as Operator for as long as 90 days, even if a user opts to delete them manually.

OpenAI has a similar policy regarding deleted data retention for ChatGPT, its conversation-driven AI platform, but the retention span there is limited to 30 days—60 days less compared to Operator.

OpenAI emphasizes that its data retention strategies for Operator are aimed at preventing misuse. “As agents are a relatively novel technology, we wanted to ensure our teams have sufficient time to investigate and evaluate potential vulnerabilities,” stated an OpenAI representative to TechCrunch. “This retention duration enables us to improve fraud detection and maintain product safety while still allowing users to manage their own data.”

The company introduced Operator on Thursday, providing subscribers to its $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan access to a research preview. Operator functions as a multifunctional AI agent equipped with a built-in browser that can autonomously execute specific tasks on websites.

OpenAI asserts that Operator is capable of automating various tasks, including arranging travel plans, securing restaurant bookings, and making online purchases. Users can select from multiple task categories within the Operator interface, such as shopping, delivery, dining, and travel.

The Operator tool takes screenshots of its integrated browser to better understand when and how to perform actions within applications, such as identifying when to click buttons or fill out forms. It’s important to note that screenshots are not captured when Operator encounters roadblocks, such as needing a password, a situation labeled by OpenAI as “take over” mode.

Nonetheless, some users may feel uneasy about sharing screenshots of their online activities with a company that can retain them for up to three months. OpenAI clarifies that, similar to the ChatGPT platform, data collected by Operator may be viewed by “a limited pool of authorized OpenAI staff” and “trusted service providers” for purposes such as abuse investigation and legal inquiries.
