In a significant stride towards digital authenticity, OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft have endorsed a Californian legislative effort that mandates the identification of AI-created materials. TechCrunch has had access to communications from these corporations expressing support for the bill, which is slated for its decisive vote come August.
The legislative proposal, known as AB 3211, introduces a mandate for embedding watermarks within the metadata of images, videos, and audio produced through artificial intelligence. While many AI entities currently adhere to such practices, the underlying issue is the general public’s lack of engagement with metadata. Furthermore, AB 3211 seeks to obligate major digital platforms, including Instagram and others, to conspicuously label AI-generated content for the lay audience’s comprehension.
As members of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, OpenAI, Adobe, and Microsoft have been instrumental in the development of C2PA metadata, which stands as the prevalent norm for denoting content crafted by AI.
Previously, in April, a prominent advocacy group, representing Adobe, Microsoft, and other leading software corporations, expressed its dissent against AB 3211 through a letter to the Californian legislative body, criticizing the measure as impractical and exceedingly demanding. However, subsequent revisions to the bill have evidently swayed their perspective.
