Nvidia-Backed SiFive Achieves $3.65 Billion Valuation for Open AI Chips

by admin

SiFive, a semiconductor firm established in 2015 by engineers from UC Berkeley, has successfully raised an impressive $400 million in an oversubscribed funding round, bringing its total valuation to $3.65 billion. This funding is particularly notable as SiFive’s RISC-V architecture stands apart from the dominant Intel x86 and ARM designs, which currently supply the majority of CPUs powering Nvidia’s GPUs for AI applications.

Nvidia not only participated in the investment round but also joined an array of other venture capital and private equity firms. The round was spearheaded by Atreides Management, led by former Fidelity investor Gavin Baker, and saw backing from prominent firms such as Apollo Global Management, D1 Capital Partners, and T. Rowe Price.

SiFive operates a licensing model similar to that of Arm in its early years, allowing businesses to adapt its chip designs to suit their individual requirements rather than selling the chips outright. In March, Arm shifted its strategy by producing its first-ever chip, an AI model developed in partnership with Meta, targeting clients like OpenAI.

What distinguishes SiFive is its commitment to open and neutral chip designs, enabling developers to modify the architecture without relying on proprietary technology. Prior to this recent funding, SiFive’s last financial boost occurred in March 2022 when it secured $175 million at a pre-money valuation of $2.33 billion, with participation from Intel Capital and Qualcomm Ventures.

Historically considered suitable for smaller embedded systems, RISC-V is now making strides into AI data center CPUs, thanks in part to the influx of capital and support from Nvidia. SiFive’s designs are set to integrate seamlessly with Nvidia’s CUDA software and its NVLink Fusion server architecture, creating an ecosystem in which diverse CPUs can collaborate within Nvidia’s “AI factory.”

This development underscores the shift in the competitive landscape, where established players like Intel and AMD are fighting for their share of the GPU market, while Nvidia strategically aligns with SiFive, an innovative startup that leverages an alternative technology model. This partnership could significantly reshape the future of CPU design and AI processing capabilities.
