Nvidia-Backed SiFive Achieves $3.65 Billion Valuation for Open AI Chips

by admin

SiFive, established in 2015 by engineers from UC Berkeley known for creating an open-source chip design, has successfully secured a remarkable $400 million in an oversubscribed funding round, propelling the company’s valuation to $3.65 billion. This significant milestone underscores the potential of SiFive’s RISC-V open chip design, which differentiates itself from the more dominant Intel x86 and ARM architectures that are primarily integrated into Nvidia’s AI computing ecosystem.

Notably, this funding round saw participation from various high-profile investors, including Nvidia itself, adding credibility to SiFive’s innovative approach. The round was led by Atreides Management, founded by former Fidelity investor Gavin Baker, alongside prominent financial firms like Apollo Global Management and D1 Capital Partners, signalling robust confidence in the company’s trajectory.

SiFive’s business model mirrors the former approach of Arm, licensing its chip designs to organisations for modification rather than manufacturing chips directly. Recent developments in the industry, including Arm’s shift to producing its first AI chip, have created a competitive landscape, but SiFive remains unique with its open and neutral chip design philosophy.

Historically, RISC-V has been associated with smaller applications, yet the infusion of capital and attention from Nvidia allows SiFive to transition into the realm of CPUs tailored for AI data centres. SiFive’s designs are compatible with Nvidia’s CUDA software and its NVLink Fusion technology, facilitating seamless integration into Nvidia’s AI infrastructure.

As industry giants Intel and AMD intensify their rivalry with Nvidia, the strategic backing of SiFive signifies a commitment to exploring alternative, open technology solutions. This places SiFive in a rare position, potentially reshaping the landscape of chip design and AI computing.
