On Thursday night, many users of X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, faced issues with their timelines and notifications. Reports indicate that posts from followed accounts stopped appearing, leaving users without updates for extended periods; some have not seen updates for over 15 hours. This problem appears to be rooted in a server-side bug, affecting both the mobile app and web versions of X, with users confirming that attempts to switch devices or sign up for the premium service did not resolve the issue.
Downdetector, which tracks application performance, noted a significant increase in reports concerning X outages. Discussions on Reddit also highlight frustrations among users, with comments from individuals across different regions, including Germany, expressing similar experiences. Despite these widespread complaints, X has not responded to requests for clarification.
This outage follows a history of significant disruptions on the platform, including a major incident in March where users globally faced accessibility problems. Musk had attributed that outage to a cyberattack, although no evidence was provided. Previous connectivity issues were also seen in December 2022 and July 2023.
Since Musk’s acquisition of X in 2022 for $44 billion, the company has undergone substantial workforce reductions, slashing its staff from 7,500 to about 1,300. As of January 2023, the platform reportedly housed only 550 full-time engineers, indicating a potential strain on resources. Further layoffs focused on the engineering team occurred in November 2024, raising concerns about the company’s ability to effectively manage and improve its services amidst rising user complaints.
