Murena, the French privacy-oriented company that has revamped Android to create deGoogled smartphones, has now introduced a tablet version. If you’re interested in acquiring a sleek Pixel Tablet but prefer to bypass the usual Google apps and services, Murena has a solution for you.
The Murena Pixel Tablet operates on the open-source /e/OS instead of Google’s standard Android, which enables it to deliver a “privacy-centered Android experience” on its 10.95-inch LCD screen.
“Experience enhanced performance and flexibility while reducing data surveillance, enjoying a more secure environment, and eliminating Google services that gather your personal information,” states Murena. The addition of this tablet to their hardware lineup comes as a response to “significant demand” for such devices.
The Pixel Tablet features 128 GB of internal storage and 8 GB of RAM, and is available for purchase from Murena’s online store for €539 (approximately $549 in the United States).
Since it is deGoogled, the device does not include the Google Play Store. Instead, /e/OS provides an app marketplace called App Lounge, where users can download apps available on Google Play and F-Droid “anonymously.” However, to access paid apps, a Google account is required. (For further details on the compromises linked to Murena’s app store approach, check out our previous review of e/OS.)
While replicating a complete app marketplace experience without any connections to Google poses a significant challenge, Murena is actively developing privacy-centric alternatives to standalone applications such as Google Drive and Office 365. Pixel Tablet users can access a freemium storage, backup, and productivity suite called Workspace, which offers up to 1 GB of free storage, with additional paid plans available as needed.
