The emerging space-as-a-service firm Muon Space has successfully completed a funding round, raising $56.7 million to enhance its satellite infrastructure, concurrently revealing a partnership with the defense leader Sierra Nevada Corp.Â
Muon Space, headquartered in California, specializes in the creation, construction, and management of satellites within the low Earth orbit for its clients. While some clients, such as Hydrosat, supply their hardware, others depend on the technology developed by Muon, including the nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance. This approach by Muon introduces a revolutionary way to access space, offering clients a streamlined path to satellite utilization without the traditional hurdles of hardware and software development, mission strategy, or data analysis.Â
The company has announced it achieved over $100 million in customer commitments this year for its Halo satellite platform. This includes an earlier announcement of securing $60 million in contracts to engineer 10 remote-sensing satellites. Additionally, a recent agreement with Sierra Nevada involves the creation of three satellites for the Vindlér remote sensing array, with Muon’s inaugural Vindlér satellite planned for a 2025 launch.Â
The funding round, Series B, saw leadership from Activate Capital and contributions from Acme Capital along with investments from Costanoa Ventures, Radical Ventures, and Congruent Ventures. This funding effort has elevated the total financing of Muon Space to beyond $91 million, factoring in a Series A round in 2022 and an initial seed round in 2021.Â
