AI assistants proficient in English often stumble when users alternate between languages. Yet, a pioneering AI companion named Silvia navigates the blend of English and Spanish effortlessly, promising to incorporate more bilingual options.
Developed over a span of one month by Mansidak Singh, a key product engineer with re:collect AI, this application emerges not from a well-funded startup but from innovation and personal initiative.
Singh recalls an encounter with an Argentinian woman who shared how mixed-language commands perplex her iPhone. Such limitations of AI assistants inspired him to create a more adaptable solution. “After engaging with the LATAM community, I realized this issue was widespread, urging me to address it,” Singh reflects.
Silvia seamlessly integrates into your typing experience as a discrete app on the keyboard. It allows users to speak in their preferred language blend, translating speech into text instantly. Initially, it bridges Spanish and English, with plans for expansion to include French, Romanian, Ukrainian, German, and Dutch. Furthermore, a tailor-made keyboard version is in the works for broader application use.
Singh was questioned about the possibility of adding Hindi to the mix. However, he clarified that currently, the system is limited to languages using the Latin script, primarily Germanic languages.
When asked about the rapid development of Silvia, Singh attributes it to his expertise and strategic use of robust APIs, including the new iOS 18 Translation API. This, combined with OpenAI’s Whisper for refinement, enhances the app’s performance significantly.
It’s important to note, Silvia prioritizes user privacy, ensuring no data retention. Its operations are fully compliant with Apple’s standards.
Silvia doesn’t aim to revolutionize the AI domain but to offer a more genuine reflection of our diverse world. Interested users can anticipate its release by the end of the month and can register here or sign up for updates if you’re inclined to forget, much like myself.
