MoviePass, well-known for its innovative movie subscription model, has unveiled its new venture, Mogul, which entered beta testing this Thursday. This daily fantasy entertainment platform is aimed specifically at film enthusiasts, allowing users to step into the shoes of studio executives.
Mogul draws inspiration from the daily fantasy sports scene, where participants act as team managers, creating rosters of real athletes and accumulating points based on actual performance. In this instance, players will select movie stars within a given budget, using in-game currency known as “studio credits”. Each day, they can refresh their lineups and compete in week-long tournaments, one-on-one matchups, and solo challenges involving predictions related to box office performance, critic reviews, and potential award outcomes.
Users also have the chance to earn digital collectibles, such as signed posters, as they advance, contributing to a competitive leaderboard. The platform operates on the Sui blockchain, developed by Mysten Labs, ensuring secure storage for players’ virtual currency and collectibles through a digital wallet.
CEO Spikes believes Mogul has significant market potential, asserting that many people can name more actors than athletes, indicating a sizable audience waiting to be engaged. Initial skepticism regarding its popularity proved unfounded, as over 400,000 users have signed up for early access. The true test will be maintaining interest leading up to the official rollout, particularly among dedicated film fans.
Initially described as a predictive market platform, Mogul is currently classified as a daily fantasy sports platform, which may expand its features in the future. Notably, it operates entirely with virtual currency, unlike more contentious prediction market platforms that face legal challenges in various jurisdictions. Spikes highlighted the complexities of compliance in the U.S. gambling landscape, emphasizing the need for careful navigation through differing state regulations.
Mogul is part of MoviePass’s broader strategy to venture into web3, with plans to reward users for attending films through on-chain incentives. The company previously partnered with Sui to facilitate payments via USD coin, further integrating blockchain technology into its operations. As Mogul seeks to carve out its niche in the entertainment space, it represents an exciting new direction for MoviePass in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
