Mogul: The Fantasy Film Studio Game Launches Public Beta
Mogul, the innovative film studio fantasy platform from MoviePass, officially launched its public beta on Wednesday, welcoming users beyond its earlier private testing phase. Designed with a focus on the Hollywood entertainment industry, Mogul allows players to take on the role of film studio owners, creating their own fictional studios by drafting teams of actors, directors, and films. The platform’s mechanics are inspired by daily fantasy sports, where players act as team managers and earn points based on the performance of their selections.
The platform is now accessible to over 400,000 users on the waiting list, along with a broader audience as it rolls out publicly. So far, about 5,000 users, including some beta testers, have had a chance to explore its features. While my experience during the preseason phase did not include active gameplay or competitive elements, I found the game relatively easy to navigate, even with limited familiarity with fantasy sports.
To get started on Mogul, players create a unique studio name and receive a budget of one million “Mogul Coin,” the platform’s virtual currency. Participants use their starting budget to assemble a roster that includes titles, actors, and directors. For instance, acquiring a high-profile sequel like “Wicked: For Good” costs $100,000, with each of the lead actresses priced at $25,000.
Players have a week to finalize their team selections and can make two complimentary swaps weekly. Strategic decision-making is vital; for example, current controversies surrounding certain actors can impact their films’ performance in the game. MoviePass founder Stacy Spikes emphasised the realism in Mogul, encouraging players to adopt a mogul’s mindset when making swaps.
Key insights for success in Mogul include monitoring emerging stars and variations in profitability. The game evaluates net profitability, not gross revenue, making timing crucial; betting on a film earlier may cost less, while picking one closer to release may be pricier.
Mogul operates on the Sui blockchain, ensuring secure tracking of user selections and trades while enabling participants to earn digital collectibles like signed posters as they climb the leaderboard. The inaugural fall season will last 12 weeks, aligning with the awards season, and features a prize pool worth up to $100,000 in tokens to incentivise participation.
To encourage early engagement, MoviePass offers exclusive in-app badges and "Founding Member" status for users who activate their accounts before October 31. Future plans include developing private leagues for friends and an iOS/Android app, with aspirations to introduce real-money competition through a licensing agreement next year.
