Mistral Launches Its AI Assistant for iOS and Android Devices

by admin

Mistral, often hailed as Europe’s promising contender in AI, is rolling out multiple enhancements for its AI assistant, Le Chat. Alongside a significant upgrade to its web interface, the company is set to launch a mobile application for both iOS and Android platforms.

Just to recap, Mistral creates its own large language models. Its premier offerings, including Mistral Large and its multimodal counterpart Pixtral Large, are accessible for commercial use via APIs or through cloud partners like Azure AI Studio, Amazon Bedrock, and Google’s Vertex AI. The company also makes several open-weight models available under the Apache 2.0 license.

Mistral aims to establish itself as a viable alternative to companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Beyond creating foundational models, its Le Chat assistant directly competes with products like ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

The introduction of a mobile version of the assistant marks a strategic move to secure a position on users’ home screens. The mobile application offers a familiar chatbot interface where users can engage with Mistral’s AI model and ask follow-up questions in a conversational manner.

Over recent months, Le Chat has progressed into a robust AI assistant. In November 2024, the company incorporated web search capabilities complete with citations. It also allows users to generate images or interact with a free-form canvas to modify text or code in a separate window.

More recently, Mistral entered into a comprehensive agreement with the news organization Agence France-Presse (AFP) to provide reliable information sourcing for its results. However, it’s worth noting that the mobile app currently does not feature a voice mode for those who prefer using speech commands with AI assistants.

With the latest update for Le Chat, Mistral is debuting a Pro subscription tier priced at $14.99 per month for the U.S. and €14.99 per month in Europe. While the specifics of the AI model being utilized are no longer disclosed, the company indicates that the Pro plan offers access to the “highest-performing model,” implying that free tier users do not have access to the pinnacle model.

Additional perks include increased limits across various functionalities and the option to choose against data sharing with Mistral — the company is implementing a pay-or-consent approach for its AI assistants.

Up to 1,000 words per second

What differentiates Mistral? The company doesn’t necessarily claim superiority over competitors’ models. Instead, it emphasizes that it can sometimes outperform rivals from a product experience perspective.

For example, Mistral asserts that Le Chat operates on “the fastest inference engines available” and can process responses at speeds of up to 1,000 words per second. Based on our experience, it indeed felt quicker compared to using ChatGPT’s 4o model.

Mistral also asserts that it produces superior images compared to ChatGPT or Grok, thanks to its use of Black Forest Labs’ Flux Ultra, an advanced image-generation model.

While these are attractive features, a crucial differentiator appears with Le Chat’s enterprise offering. Mistral allows deployment of Le Chat within user environments, incorporating customized models and interfaces.

For sectors like defense or banking, the ability to deploy an AI assistant on-premises is essential—a feature currently unavailable with ChatGPT Enterprise or Claude Enterprise. This flexibility may aid in boosting the company’s revenue prospects.

Nonetheless, the real challenge lies in whether Mistral’s mobile app can entice AI enthusiasts to explore its chatbot capabilities. As of now, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Google Gemini occupy the #2, #3, and #6 positions respectively in the ranking of the most downloaded iPhone applications in the United States.
