Midjourney, the AI platform known for creating images and allegedly earning over $200 million in revenue without backing from venture capitalists, is branching out into hardware development.
This expansion was revealed through a message posted on X on Wednesday, with the company disclosing that its new hardware division will be stationed in San Francisco.
Hints about the direction of Midjourney’s hardware ambitions may lie in its February acquisition of Ahmad Abbas, a former Neuralink employee and engineer behind the Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s venture into mixed reality headsets.
David Holz, CEO of Midjourney and a co-founder of Leap Motion, a company that excelled in motion-tracking technology, is no newbie in the hardware scene. Interestingly, Holz and Abbas were colleagues at Leap.
Despite facing legal challenges related to its AI training methodologies, Midjourney reveals its continuous progress in developing AI models that produce videos and 3D content. It’s conceivable that the company’s move into hardware might support these endeavors as well.
