Microsoft Anticipates AI Capacity Limitations This Quarter

by admin

During Microsoft’s recent earnings call for the third quarter of fiscal 2025, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood flagged potential service interruptions for customers using the company’s AI services. She noted that the demand for these services may soon exceed the available capacity of Microsoft’s data centres, possibly as early as June.

Hood explained that while Microsoft aimed to achieve a balance by the end of the fourth quarter, an unexpected surge in demand has left them somewhat short. “We are going to be a little short, a little tight as we exit the year,” she admitted, highlighting the increasing pressure on resources.

This announcement comes on the heels of recent reports that Microsoft has cancelled several data centre leases that are said to account for substantial capacity—approximately a couple of hundred megawatts or the equivalent of two complete data centres. Following the initial cancellation in February, more reports surfaced indicating additional lease terminations, despite Microsoft asserting that these cancellations do not influence its overarching investment strategy.

The company remains steadfast in its commitment to investing $80 billion in data centre infrastructure throughout the year, with half of that budget allocated to facilities situated in the United States. Hood mentioned that the dynamics of current and future demand are distinct, emphasising the complex nature of planning in this rapidly evolving field.

The lead times for establishing data centres—as Hood elaborated—can stretch from two to seven years, necessitating ongoing adjustments as demand trajectories shift. Moreover, during the earnings call, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella pointed out that the company has successfully opened data centres in ten new countries across four continents over the past quarter, signalling its ambitious global expansion strategy.

Ultimately, Microsoft is navigating a delicate balancing act as it seeks to address surging AI demand while managing its data centre capacities and expansion initiatives effectively.
