Meta Suspends the Development of Its Generative AI Tools in Brazil

by admin

Meta has halted the operation of its artificial intelligence assistant following a prohibition by Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), which forbade the organization from utilizing personal data of Brazilian citizens to refine its AI algorithms. This action hampers Facebook’s aspirations to expand its AI offerings in Brazil, a country boasting a populace exceeding 200 million.

As referenced in the report by the authority, the Brazilian agency implemented this precautionary step due to “an immediate risk of significant detriment and damage to the essential rights of individuals that is either irreparable or challenging to amend.”

Furthermore, the ANPD has imposed a monetary penalty of 50,000 reais per day for any instances of non-compliance.

A representative for Meta communicated to TechCrunch, confirming the measure, stating, “In response to ANPD’s concerns regarding genAI, we have temporarily ceased the deployment of genAI functionalities that were operational in Brazil as we initiate dialogs with the ANPD to clarify these issues.”

Meta has been leveraging user-generated data to refine its AI technologies in the United States and various other territories for multiple years. However, in May, Meta was compelled to postpone its plans for AI training in Europe and the U.K. when the Irish Data Protection Commission expressed objections to these initiatives.
