Meta has officially launched Edits, a new global video-creation app similar to CapCut, aimed at empowering content creators. This app, now available on both iOS and Android, facilitates various video creation tasks, including the tracking of video ideas, sourcing inspiration, and utilising effects alongside AI tools. Initially, all features will be free, though Meta has hinted at the potential for paid options in future updates.
The development of Edits began in January, prompted by the temporary removal of CapCut from U.S. app stores amid uncertainties surrounding TikTok. With concerns about TikTok’s future in the U.S. market, Meta is strategically positioned to attract users who may seek alternatives for their short-form content needs. Edits is designed for creators producing content for Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms, including TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
One notable advantage of Edits over CapCut is the ability to export videos without a watermark at no cost, whereas users of CapCut must pay for the Pro version for a similar benefit. Edits includes several innovative features: the “Ideas” tool for brainstorming, “Projects” for managing video creations, and an “Inspirations” tool that allows users to explore trending audio for their edits.
Additional features include a “Green screen” option for background replacement, a “Timeline” for organising clips, and automatic captions. Users can even turn static images into videos with the AI-powered “Animate” feature and isolate objects using the “Cutouts” tool. Once completed, videos can be shared directly to Instagram or Facebook or saved for posting elsewhere.
Edits also offers insights that assist creators in refining their content strategy and maximising reach. Looking ahead, Meta has teased future updates, including an AI-powered “Modify” tool to enhance video aesthetics, a “Keyframes” feature for precise control over clip attributes, and new collaboration options for feedback on drafts. Further enhancements, such as expanded font choices, text animations, transitions, and audio offerings, are also in the pipeline.
Overall, Edits represents Meta’s commitment to providing creators with a robust platform that not only simplifies video creation but also encourages innovative expression across multiple social media platforms.
