Meta has entered into a significant solar energy agreement, securing a total capacity of 650 megawatts across projects in Texas and Kansas. The esteemed American utility provider, AES, is spearheading the solar initiatives, which consist of 400 megawatts designated for Texas and 250 megawatts for Kansas, as reported to TechCrunch.
This latest agreement is part of Meta’s strategy to power its expanding data centre network, which is increasingly reliant on renewable energy to support its growing artificial intelligence operations. Currently, Meta boasts a renewable energy capacity of over 12 gigawatts within its portfolio.
Typically, AES finalises power purchase agreements (PPAs) two to three years before the projects commence commercial operations. These agreements generally span an average of 15 to 20 years, as noted by AES spokesperson, Katie Lau.
This marks the fourth solar agreement that Meta has announced in 2023, with all projects located in Texas. The previous agreements comprise one for 595 megawatts, another for 505 megawatts, and two more each at 200 megawatts.
Texas has emerged as a front-runner in solar energy development, leading the United States in new solar capacity installations for 2023 and 2024, as indicated by the Solar Energy Industries Association. The state benefits from abundant sunlight, expedited permitting processes, and swift grid connections.
The advantages of streamlined permitting and grid connections significantly reduce the time required to establish new solar capacity, allowing projects to be completed in months rather than years. Furthermore, solar power remains one of the most cost-effective sources of new energy generation, even prior to accounting for subsidies.
Data centres are not hindered by construction delays, as solar farms can provide electricity during various phases of their implementation. AES’s CEO, Andrés Gluski, highlighted solar energy’s rapid deployment and economical electricity as key factors that attract large-scale tech companies like Meta to invest in solar initiatives.
