Meta and Spotify are delving into more profound music collaborations within Meta’s Instagram platform. Recent developments show that they are experimenting with a feature enabling users to seamlessly share their current music listens via Instagram’s Notes feature.
This new capability came to light through the investigatory work of reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, renowned for uncovering features in the pipeline. Yet, it’s customary for companies like Meta and Spotify to evaluate new ideas frequently, which doesn’t guarantee the feature’s release to the general public soon.
In a leaked image shared by Paluzzi on Meta’s Threads, we see a novel option enabling “continuous sharing” of music from Spotify, diverging from the traditional method of selecting songs from Instagram’s in-built catalog.
“You can stop sharing at any time,” also notes the shared message.

Should this feature be officially rolled out, it would enhance an update introduced over a year ago, which allowed Instagram users to share 30-second song snippets via Notes. Launched in 2022, Notes offered Instagram users a space to post status updates or brief messages atop their Instagram inbox. At its launch, Instagram confirmed the music clips feature was accessible globally, wherever Instagram had music licensing agreements.
Integrating tightly with Spotify could streamline the sharing of song snippets, enriching Instagram content even when users are occupied with other applications.
This proposed feature echoes the kind of social engagement seen within Spotify’s own ecosystem, where connections through Facebook enable visibility of friends’ music activities in a dedicated desktop app section. Spotify has also flirted with a ‘Community’ feature for real-time music sharing on mobile, though it has not been officially released.
Even as Spotify bolsters its social offerings, with recent enhancements like podcast commenting and enriched user profiles, there’s an acknowledgment that music discovery frequently transpires on dedicated social networks where users have established communities and habitually engage.
Additionally, signs of Meta and Spotify’s closer collaboration were hinted at by technologist Chris Messina, who noted that Instagram had integrated a “SpotifyiOS.framework” into its app, timing this update with version v.338.0, unveiled over a month ago.
Earlier, Messina cited another potential feature for music addition on user profiles, rolled out last week in a partnership with artist Sabrina Carpenter. This suggests further integrations between Instagram and Spotify could emerge to competitively face off with TikTok’s stronghold on music discovery.
Historically, Meta and Spotify have forged collaborations on musical offerings, seen in 2021 with a miniplayer feature on Facebook for streaming Spotify directly within the app. Moreover, the companies find a common opponent in Apple, criticizing its App Store dominance for hindering their own in-app payment processes and necessitating revenue sharing through commissions on in-app purchases. Additionally, Apple’s privacy measure, named ATT or app tracking transparency, adversely affected Meta’s advertising efforts, while Apple Music stands in direct competition with Spotify.
Requests for comments from Spotify and Meta went unanswered.
