Mastodon, the decentralized alternative to X, plans to introduce a contentious feature borrowed from the platform previously known as Twitter: quote posts. On Friday, the company revealed its ongoing efforts to implement this feature, which has sparked debate among users regarding its potential for misuse, including online harassment and bullying.
Critics have consistently maintained that the introduction of quote tweets significantly harmed Twitter, transforming the platform into a more toxic environment.
A segment of Mastodon users is firmly against the inclusion of quote posts, arguing that this feature often leads to “dunking” on others, which fosters a cycle of negativity and can provoke a wave of abusive responses directed at the original poster—especially if the individual humorously criticizing the post has a significant following.
Conversely, some users advocate for quote posts, asserting that this feature simplifies the process of referencing content from other posts when crafting replies. Moreover, quote posts would align Mastodon more closely with its competitors, such as X and emerging platforms like Threads and Bluesky.

Mastodon acknowledged in a blog post that this feature is seen as both a “concern” for some users and a “highly sought-after” addition by others.
“Many users simply do not wish for their content to be redefined by others; some find that when reposted, they receive unsolicited attention,” the blog post explains.
In 2024, the organization applied for a grant to finance the development of quote posts, following initial discussions about the feature. Now, they are sharing updates on their progress and addressing user feedback.
To begin with, Mastodon plans to give users control over whether their posts can be quoted. This approach aims to minimize the chances of unwanted attention or hostile replies, though it’s worth noting that users could still capture screenshots of others’ posts if they wish to engage in trolling behavior.
Additionally, users will receive notifications whenever their posts are quoted and will have the ability to retract their post from a quoting context at any given time. This feature could prove useful in scenarios where a quote post gains significant traction, leading the original author to reconsider the visibility of their post.
Aside from potential abuse, Mastodon also mentioned technical hurdles in implementing quote posts, as there isn’t a uniform method for integrating this feature into ActivityPub, the protocol that supports Mastodon and other federated applications.
Some third-party Mastodon clients already offer their own iteration of quote posts, but lack the enhancements that Mastodon seeks to implement for additional user privacy and control. As a result, Mastodon is collaborating with external developers to create a specification enabling uniform access to these functionalities across all Mastodon applications.
The introduction of quote posts will also impact various components of Mastodon’s codebase, including the ActivityPub-handling code, public API, web interface, moderation tools, administration panel, and official applications for iOS and Android.
Regrettably, Mastodon did not provide a timeline for when this feature might be launched to the public, only stating that the development of quote posts “will require additional time.”
