All attention was focused on French President Emmanuel Macron this past Sunday as he wrapped up the inaugural day of the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit held in Paris, where he revealed a substantial investment initiative amounting to €109 billion (approximately $112 billion at current rates) dedicated to enhancing the French AI sector.
Macron emphasized this financial backing from private sector stakeholders who are inclined to establish data centers primarily in France and occasionally invest in AI startups. He noted that the primary attraction for international investors eyeing France for large-scale data center projects is the nation’s abundant supply of nuclear energy.
“I have a close friend across the ocean who often says ‘drill, baby, drill.’ In France, on the other hand, we simply say ‘plug, baby, plug,’” Macron remarked.
However, he aims to ensure that the focus of the AI Action Summit is not solely on France. “To me, this summit signifies much more than just announcing significant investments in France. It serves as an urgent call for a cohesive European strategy,” he stated.
“Tomorrow, President von der Leyen will reveal the European AI strategy, marking a crucial moment. This strategy presents a unique chance for Europe to speed up, simplify our regulations, enhance the single market, and boost investments in computing capabilities,” he commented.
As the European Union seeks to streamline regulations, Macron appears to endorse this approach. “It is evident that we need to align ourselves with global standards concerning transmission, permitting, authorization, clinical trials — essentially in every sector,” he asserted.
Macron also called on European businesses to prioritize purchases from local startups. He pointed out that companies in the U.S. and China typically choose domestic solutions, while Europe tends to fall short in this aspect, particularly with technology.
On Tuesday, world leaders and technology executives will present a new declaration. Many will be examining both its content and the list of nations endorsing the commitment at the conclusion of the summit to ascertain if there is still potential for agreement on priorities regarding AI regulations.
