Klarna’s Revenue per Employee Surges to Almost $1 Million Fueled by AI-Driven Efficiency Boost

In a notable shift towards artificial intelligence, Klarna has taken substantial steps to integrate its internally developed AI systems, leveraging the capabilities of OpenAI throughout its operations. The buy now, pay later service has moved beyond mere rhetoric; Klarna ended its costly partnership with Salesforce CRM and reduced its hiring as it increasingly relies on AI to perform tasks traditionally undertaken by human employees.

On a recent announcement, Klarna asserted that its AI initiatives have led to remarkable efficiency improvements, with revenue per employee projected to reach $1 million, a sharp rise from $575,000 per employee the previous year. Most operational functions have shown increased efficiency due to these AI deployments, with the most pronounced financial benefits observed in reduced customer service expenses.

Last year, Klarna indicated plans to replace nearly 700 customer service contractors with AI chatbots. However, the company recently reversed course, offering customers the choice to interact with human agents once again.

In March, Klarna also filed documents for its long-anticipated U.S. initial public offering (IPO) but subsequently delayed those plans last month amid stock market fluctuations resulting from former President Trump’s tariff announcements.

Despite reporting a 13% rise in revenue to $701 million for the first quarter of 2025, Klarna has yet to provide a timeline for when it will pursue its IPO.
