Jolla has officially unveiled the inaugural release of its server-centric AI assistant, showcasing their ambition to create a privacy-preserving AI solution, named the Jolla Mind2. This initiative, first brought to public attention by TechCrunch during the MWC event in February, marks a pivotal step for the rejuvenated company.
In a live broadcast on Monday, the company launched the preorder campaign for this product, promising the initial batch of deliveries to European customers later this year. Global preorders are set to begin in June, with shipment schedules targeting late this year or the start of the next.
Since revealing the first 3D prototype over two months ago, the buzz around consumer AI technologies, including products like Humane’s Ai Pin and the Rabbit R1, has been palpable. Yet, these innovations have faced criticism over imperfect or developing user experiences, highlighting a trend where early AI gadgets offer more novelty than practical utility.
The team behind Jolla Mind2 is determined to steer clear of these challenges, focusing on delivering a product that fulfills its promises, says CEO and co-founder Antti Saarnio. Their strategy involves a cautious approach to development to avoid overstating capabilities and underperforming in delivery.
“We are witnessing a significant moment of disruption in AI, particularly as it becomes more integrated into our software ecosystems. However, initial attempts in this space were premature, and that’s where the difficulty lies,” Saarnio explained to TechCrunch, emphasizing the importance of launching a functional product.
He admitted that while the feedback has been harsh, it’s justified given the recent track record of AI-related launches.
Saarnio revealed plans to distribute a limited batch of devices (up to 500) to early European adopters this fall, tapping into the loyal community that has grown around their previous creations like the Sailfish mobile OS.
Despite anticipated pricing challenges, the Jolla Mind2 is set at €699 (VAT included), reflecting an upgrade in hardware capabilities such as increased RAM (16GB) and storage space (1TB). However, users should note that a monthly subscription fee starting at €9.99 is required, signifying that this AI tool will not come cheap.
Embedding AI agents for productivity
The innovative Jolla Mind2 device is designed with a suite of AI agents crafted for various productivity applications. These agents, capable of interfacing with third-party services through APIs, offer functionalities ranging from managing your inbox to keeping tabs on professional connections briefly showcased at MWC.

In a recent demonstration with TechCrunch, Saarnio previewed the latest Jolla Mind2 features, including an updated email agent, document overview and summarization tools, electronic document signing capabilities, and an innovative “knowledge bases” feature for extending AI functionalities.
Although the demonstration revealed some latency issues, Saarnio assured that these were temporary glitches. He also discussed future improvements, including seamless agent transitions powered by the system’s semantic understanding capabilities.
Antti Saarnio also detailed the planned expansion of AI agents aimed at enriching user interaction through auxiliary services like calendar management, storage optimization, and enhanced messaging functionalities, in addition to a wellness-focused “coach agent.”
A key aspect of the Jolla Mind2 lies in its commitment to privacy, promising on-device data processing to safeguard user information from cloud-based risks associated with external AI systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Although the tech promises enhanced privacy, reducing latency remains a priority to ensure the device aligns with the intended productivity and convenience for ‘prosumer’ users, alongside its fundamental objective of protecting personal data.
Saarnio is confident in the device’s foundational AI model, emphasizing its capacity to connect with a wide array of data sources for enriched processing capabilities. For cases where the local AI model’s scope is insufficient, users will have the option to access external large language models (LLMs) with informed consent about privacy implications.
With a focus on refining the product, performance, and security are paramount. Among the future enhancements, private VPN setups for secure communication and encrypted cloud backups for data loss prevention are being explored to ensure user data remains inaccessible to external parties. The privacy-focused design aims to empower users by protecting their information integrity.
Justifying AI in physical form
Addressing skepticism surrounding the necessity of dedicated AI hardware, Saarnio argues the benefits of a stationary AI device that complements mobile usage, highlighting the potential inefficiencies and costs associated with cloud-based personal AI servers.
Moreover, the introduction of “knowledge bases” promises an extended utility for the device, allowing users to access verified databases to explore topics in depth, enhancing the model’s informational support capabilities.
Saarnio anticipates the community’s involvement in compiling and rating knowledge bases, utilizing domain expertise to support truthful and reliable content sharing amidst an increasingly AI-generated information landscape.
Beyond addressing the challenge of distinguishing credible information online, the Jolla Mind2 endeavors to offer a serene digital workspace, empowering users to manage their digital exposure and reclaim agency over their software interactions.
While the consumer market presents its challenges, Jolla sees potential for expansion through B2B licensing, potentially reaching a wider audience by collaborating with partners to distribute the AI device, with business entities like Venho AI leading the software development and licensing initiatives.
As Jolla continues to develop and refine its pioneering product, the company’s commitment to delivering a robust, privacy-centric AI device stands as a testament to its vision for the future of personal computing.
