Jio Collaborates with MediaTek from Taiwan to Enter the Electric Two-Wheeler Sector

by admin

Indian conglomerate Jio has formed a strategic alliance with Taiwan’s fabless semiconductor leader MediaTek to cater to the rising demand in the electric scooter segment with advanced digital dashboard solutions.

Revealed on Thursday at a prominent industry occasion in New Delhi, this tie-up aims to equip India’s electric scooters, and potentially those in similar markets, with MediaTek’s semiconductor solutions and Jio’s hardware alongside an Android-based platform. These digital instrument panels utilize the Android-derived AvniOS, operating with MediaTek’s MT8766 and MT8768 chips.

This collaboration stands to greatly benefit both corporations. Given India’s position as a major global market for two-wheelers, it has ambitions to have all two-wheeler sales be electric by 2030.

Through this venture, Jio is poised to enhance its profit margins by promoting 4G packages to vehicle proprietors, plus offering additional services like cloud storage and mapping aids. Eventually, it envisages generating revenue from the data gathered via its 4G enabled devices.

A branch under Reliance Industries’ Jio Platforms named Jio Things, which specializes in IoT gadgets for the telecom behemoth, has been involved in the development of these two-wheeler digital clusters since the previous year, as per information gathered by TechCrunch. This includes a specialized team in Bengaluru focused on crafting this Android-based software for electric vehicles over recent months.

The system software for the clusters offers features like real-time analytics, customizable displays, voice recognition capabilities, and compatibility with vehicle controllers, IoT-based charging facilities, and an embedded battery management framework. Additionally, it integrates the Jio Automotive App Suite, providing access to diverse services such as Jio’s Voice Assistant, the music streaming platform JioSaavn, the JioPages web browser, and the JioXploR geolocation service.

“As we navigate the transition from mechanical to connected and technologically advanced two-wheelers, MediaTek, with its substantial resources, is ideally placed to assist both incumbent and emerging players in succeeding within the EV two-wheeler space. Thus, partnering with Jio represents a promising and exciting opportunity for us,” CK Wang, General Manager at MediaTek’s IoT business unit, commented during a discussion with TechCrunch.

The relationship between MediaTek and Jio is not new. MediaTek provides Jio with system chips for its JioFiber and Jio AirFiber router products, which facilitate broadband services. MediaTek chips are also a key component in Jio’s set-top box offerings.

Seeing the potential in the electric vehicle sector, specifically electric two-wheelers which are seeing a marked increase in interest in India. The nation is on the brink of achieving sales of over a million units annually. Indeed, electric two-wheelers are expected to command a market share upwards of 45% by 2030, a significant jump from the current 5%.

However, Jio has wider ambitions beyond simply two-wheelers. The company is also engaging with several stakeholders, including a number of automobile manufacturers in India, to explore the integration of its operating systems and digital clusters, according to insights shared by two individuals in the know with TechCrunch.

“This partnership underscores our dedication to spearheading global innovation from India and improving consumer experiences in IoT technology by combining MediaTek’s sophisticated chipsets with our state-of-the-art digital solutions. This collaboration is set to redefine benchmarks by ensuring smooth performance and offering an unmatched customer experience poised for the future of mobility,” stated Kiran Thomas, president, and CEO of Jio Platforms, reflecting on the collaboration.

Jio, reportedly planning to separate from Reliance Industries for an IPO valued at an astonishing $112 billion, continues to quietly expand its presence in the automotive sector. Last year, the company unveiled a diagnostic and vehicle tracking device equipped with an embedded eSIM known as JioMotive. Furthermore, it offers a smart EV charging solution that supports customized charging infrastructure for businesses and residential complexes.
