On Friday, Apple shared new statistics revealing the user adoption rates for iOS 18. Since its public launch in September 2024, the mobile operating system is currently active on 68% of eligible devices, with that figure rising to 78% among iPhones released in the past four years.
For older iPhones, 19% are still utilizing iOS 17, while 13% are operating on even earlier versions. Among iPhones introduced in the last four years, 19% are also on iOS 17.
The percentage for devices using older iOS versions drops to 5%, which can be attributed to the proportion of these devices that originally shipped with either iOS 17 or 18, as well as the tendency of early adopters to keep their devices updated with the latest operating systems. As noted by 9 to 5 Mac, these figures closely mimic those released by Apple in 2024 for iOS 17 adoption.
The highlight feature introduced with iOS 18 is Apple Intelligence, the company’s novel approach to generative AI. This was rolled out with the first major update, 18.1, followed by additional enhancements in update 18.2. The latest public version currently available is 18.2.1. However, Apple Intelligence has encountered several hiccups, including one incident that prompted the company to retract its News notification summary feature.
In contrast, the adoption rate for iPadOS 18 lags behind that of its mobile equivalent, with only 53% of all iPads currently running iPadOS 18. This figure increases to 63% for iPads launched in the last four years.
