Meta has announced that Instagram Threads will start testing video advertisements as part of its growing advertising strategy, a move that aligns it more closely with competitor X. This initiative was revealed during Meta’s presentation at the IAB NewFronts, an event where social media platforms showcase their offerings to potential advertisers.
Threads is set to allow a select group of advertisers to trial video ad formats, specifically in 19:9 or 1:1 ratios, which will be displayed among regular content in users’ feeds. While Meta did not provide specifics on pricing or the frequency of these ads, the test represents an extension of its advertising capabilities that were launched only a month prior for global advertisers.
The update comes amid notable growth for Threads, which has now surpassed 350 million monthly active users. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that engagement has increased by 35% due to enhancements in the app’s recommendation system. Moreover, alongside the introduction of video ads, Meta is piloting ‘Reels trending ads’ that will be situated next to the most popular Reels created by users.
In a competitive landscape, rival TikTok recently expanded its advertising features through the Pulse Suite, allowing brands to promote themselves adjacent to trending content across various categories, events, and lifestyle topics. This move by TikTok highlights the increasing convergence of advertising strategies among social media platforms.
Additionally, Meta is testing new features in Instagram’s Creator Marketplace to help advertisers identify popular trends and is also rolling out a Creator Marketplace API to facilitate connections between businesses and high-quality content creators. Another update includes Video Expansion for Facebook Reels, which enhances video assets by generating new pixels to provide a more immersive viewing experience.
Overall, Meta’s latest initiatives reveal its commitment to evolving its advertising products and adapting to the changing dynamics of social media engagement, ensuring they remain competitive in a rapidly developing market.
