Important Advisory: Avoid Sharing Your Medical Images with AI Chatbots

by admin

Before you dive into your day, here’s a crucial reminder: Think carefully before sharing your private medical information with an AI chatbot.

Many people are increasingly engaging with generative AI chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, to seek guidance on health-related issues and gain insights into their medical conditions. Some individuals have even turned to dubious applications that use AI to evaluate whether a person’s genitals are free of diseases. More recently, since October, users on the social media platform X have been encouraged to upload their X-rays, MRIs, and PET scans to the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok, for assistance in interpreting these medical images.

Medical data is classified as a sensitive category under federal regulations, typically allowing only you the choice to navigate around those protections. However, just because you have the option doesn’t imply you should take that route. Advocates for security and privacy have consistently cautioned against the potential risks of sharing sensitive information, as it can be used to train AI models and may lead to the exposure of your confidential data in the future.

Generative AI models often rely on the data provided, under the assumption that it enhances the model’s information and accuracy. Nonetheless, there is often a lack of transparency regarding how the submitted data will be utilized or shared, as well as with whom; companies can easily alter these practices. This places immense trust on users, who essentially must take the companies at their word.

Instances have been reported where individuals discovered their own private medical records within AI training datasets, which implies that such information can also be accessed by others, including healthcare professionals, potential employers, or government entities. Moreover, many consumer applications fall outside the purview of HIPAA, the U.S. healthcare privacy law, leaving your uploaded data unprotected.

Elon Musk, the owner of X, who encouraged users to upload their medical images to Grok, acknowledged that the outcomes generated by Grok are “still early stage,” yet he believes the AI model “will become extremely proficient.” The goal of inviting users to submit their medical imagery is for the AI model to enhance its capabilities over time and deliver accurate interpretations of medical scans consistently. However, the specifics regarding the access to this Grok data remain ambiguous, as noted by other sources; Grok’s privacy policy indicates that X shares certain users’ personal information with an unspecified number of “related” companies.

Always keep in mind that anything shared online can linger indefinitely.
