A prevailing dilemma in the drone industry is determining the optimal utilization of this technology. A notable application has become inspections, with these unmanned vehicles being dispatched to hazardous or inaccessible areas such as electrical utilities and oil platforms. Within this sector, a noteworthy evolution is the rise of inventory drones, which have gained traction lately.
The Ingka Group, holding the reins over numerous Ikea outlets that account for about 90% of its commercial transactions, is at the forefront of adopting this nascent technology. Given the nature of their business, with vast warehouses filled with bulky products, it’s an understandable move. For humans, covering the expanse of these spaces is daunting, and for most automated machines, navigating the vertical array is equally challenging.
This is where the utility of approximately 100 drones that Ikea mobilizes throughout Europe becomes clear. These nimble aerial scanners offer continuous inventory updates and can access elevations that are out of reach for humans and a majority of mechanized assistants.
Decorated in Ikea’s signature blue and yellow hues, accompanied by the iconic Ikea emblem and the affable “Hej!” greeting, these drones are manufactured by Verity. This collaboration has garnered investor interest, significantly boosting Verity’s financial backing with a $32 million fundraise in March followed by an additional $11 million in a subsequent round four months later.
“Experimenting and learning from diverse sources is something we value highly, and this initiative exemplifies our collaborative effort with external partners to discover mutually beneficial solutions,” stated Peter Ac, the head of logistics at Ikea, in a declaration.
Initiated in 2021 in Verity’s homeland of Switzerland, this venture with Ikea was tailored to meet the specific needs of the retail titan. It now spans across 16 locales, including stores in Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
Although Verity may currently enjoy a spotlight for its collaboration, it is not without competition in the inventory drone space. Rivals such as Corvus Robotics, Gather AI, and Indoor Robotics, alongside Dexory with its towering telescoping autonomous robot, are strong contenders, each bringing innovations for reaching the lofty shelves.
