Meta has recently revised its privacy policy concerning its AI-powered Ray-Ban Meta glasses, granting the company greater authority over the data it collects for training its artificial intelligence models. In an email sent to users, Meta informed Ray-Ban Meta owners that AI features will now be enabled by default. Consequently, the glasses will process and analyse photos and videos captured while specific AI functions are active, with user voice recordings being stored to enhance product performance, and there will be no option to decline this feature.

It’s important to note that the Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not continuously record audio; they only store conversations triggered by the “Hey Meta” wake-up command. According to the privacy notice related to voice services, any voice recordings and transcripts may be retained for up to a year to assist in improving Meta’s offerings. Users who prefer their voice data not to contribute to AI training must manually delete each recording via the complementary companion app.

This shift mirrors a recent policy modification from Amazon, which now processes all Echo commands in the cloud, thereby eliminating a more private option for local voice data processing. Both Meta and Amazon accumulate substantial voice recordings as they are invaluable for training generative AI products. A diverse array of audio inputs enables these companies’ AI systems to better understand different accents, dialects, and speech patterns.

However, such enhancements come at the potential cost of user privacy. Users might not fully comprehend that, by capturing photos of loved ones while using their glasses, those individuals could inadvertently feature in Meta’s training datasets. The vast amounts of content required for training AI models promote companies’ incentives to utilise data generated by their users.

Meta’s strategy of gathering user data is not a novel approach. The company already utilises public posts from Facebook and Instagram to train its Llama AI models. This overarching trend underscores the continuing tension between advancing technology and the preservation of individual privacy in the digital age.
