IBM Unveils Next-Generation Mainframe Designed for the Era of AI

by admin

IBM has announced the launch of its newest mainframe system, the z17, which is poised to enhance the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) across various sectors. This advanced mainframe, built on the IBM Telum II processor, supports over 250 AI applications, including AI agents and generative AI technologies.

Despite the perception that mainframes are outdated, a significant 71% of Fortune 500 companies utilise them, as reported by various sources. The mainframe market was valued at approximately $5.3 billion in 2024, indicating a robust demand for this type of computing.

The z17 boasts impressive processing capabilities, achieving 450 billion inference operations daily – a 50% improvement compared to its predecessor, the IBM z16. This system is designed to seamlessly integrate with various hardware, software, and open-source frameworks. Tina Tarquinio, IBM’s Vice President of Product Management and Design for IBM Z, noted that the z17 has taken five years to develop, predating the AI boom triggered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT launch in late 2022.

Throughout its development, IBM invested over 2,000 research hours gathering insight from more than 100 clients. Tarquinio remarked on the alignment between initial feedback and the evolving direction of the market, stating, “It’s been a journey to introduce an AI accelerator, especially with the rapid advancements in the AI sector seen in late 2022.”

The z17 is engineered for flexibility, ready to adapt as the AI landscape evolves. Upon its release, it will support 48 IBM Spyre AI accelerator chips, with plans to double that number within a year. Tarquinio emphasised their intentional design choices, stating, “We’re purposely building in headroom and AI agility to accommodate future advancements in models.”

Additionally, energy efficiency is a key feature of the z17. Tarquinio proudly highlighted that the z17 improves AI processing by 7.5 times while consuming significantly less energy than competing platforms – offering five and a half times less energy use for multi-model operations.

The z17 is set to be officially available on June 18, 2024, promising to push the boundaries of what organisations can achieve with AI integration. Overall, IBM aims to ensure that its clients have the resources to navigate the rapidly changing tech landscape.
