How Producing A Cappella Performances and Dance Shows Guided Northzone’s Latest Partner, Molly Alter, Into a Venture Capital Career

by admin

Molly Alter is a woman of many talents. She dives into the world of mockumentary filmmaking with a unique project that explores a universe where charades evolve into a major industry. Her adventures don’t stop there; she’s an aficionado of caesar salads, critiquing and sharing her thoughts on various restaurant renditions on her blog, JULIUS. Recently, she’s taken on the role of Northzone’s newest partner.

The journey to venture capital was unconventional for Alter. Raised by journalist parents, she found herself immersed in the arts, particularly theater and improvisational comedy. This creative foundation led her to establish a venture at Harvard, focusing on recording a capella performances and dance shows, paving her way into the venture capital sphere.

Speaking with TechCrunch, Alter shared that her initial business venture began as a means to earn income, preferable to her job cleaning restrooms. Surprisingly, the project flourished into a legitimate enterprise, expanding to a team of 27. Insight Partners later reached out through Facebook Messenger, offering her a position in their analyst program.

Graduating from Harvard, she told TechCrunch, “I headed directly to Insight. Being an outsider with minimal knowledge about diverse businesses and their models, I saw it as a learning opportunity. The idea was to gain broad exposure before diving into another entrepreneurial venture.” However, she remained in venture capital, transitioned to Index as a partner in their London office in 2020, and later moved to Northzone and New York City in 2023, recently elevated to partner at the firm with a focus on vertical software. Northzone, a multi-stage firm, is actively supporting startups in the U.S. and Europe with its €1.1 billion 10th fund.

Although Alter anticipated returning to entrepreneurship, she found a more fitting role in venture capital, a path that retrospectively seemed predestined, sparked by her innate curiosity and fascination with creation and origin stories, even as trivial as the origin of her bread for toast.

“Investing in innovation, at its essence, is about understanding current mechanisms and how they can be optimized,” Alter emphasized.

Deep diving into subjects and mastering their nuances is what Alter enjoys about her role as a VC. She highlighted her investment in GovDash as an exemplar, underscoring the complexities and anti-corruption measures involved in government contracting, even for seemingly mundane roles like janitorial services.

“This role is thrilling,” Alter exclaimed. “You get to unveil the intricacies of commonplace things and explore how to solve existing frustrations innovatively.”

Her creative pursuits have unequivocally shaped her as an investor. For instance, her passion for film led her to identify and invest in Frame.io, a Series C investment during her tenure at Insight. The cloud-based video collaboration platform resonated with her filmmaking background, which culminated in a $1.3 billion acquisition by Adobe in 2021.

Alter believes her varied interests foster deeper, more meaningful connections with founders, establishing a level of trust that weathers all seasons.

Venture capital, as per Alter, hasn’t been a walk in the park, yet she remains committed to advancing in this field. She aims to navigate through the AI buzz to spotlight startups with substantial promise, with a keen focus on vertical software and investments sourced from New York.

“There have been challenging times, feeling akin to an uphill battle,” Alter admitted. “Despite hurdles, I’m convinced this is where I belong. The real test? The eagerness I feel on a Sunday night about the upcoming week’s engagements with founders, void of the Sunday scaries. At Northzone, I’m eagerly anticipating the week ahead.”
