Hims & Hers, a telehealth and wellness company, has appointed Mo Elshenawy, a seasoned expert from the autonomous vehicle sector, as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). This strategic decision aligns with the company’s goal to enhance its AI-driven product offerings, according to co-founder and CEO Andrew Dudum.
Elshenawy, who previously served as president and CTO of Cruise, a self-driving car company, left the organisation after General Motors discontinued its autonomous vehicle programme. Although the transition from autonomous vehicles to healthcare may appear unconventional, Dudum believes that experience in high-stakes environments can significantly contribute to advancing healthcare technology.
Dudum explained that he sought leaders from the autonomous driving industry explicitly for their expertise in harnessing technology and data within sensitive contexts where human lives are at stake. Elshenawy echoed this sentiment, asserting that while it might seem like a significant shift, the principles of real-time decision-making in regulated automotive environments share important similarities with healthcare. Both sectors require building trust and ensuring safety through reliable AI-driven solutions.
Founded in 2017 and based in San Francisco, Hims & Hers initially focused on men’s health but has since expanded into women’s health and mental health services. The company has gathered extensive data on clinical visits and patient prescriptions, which is being utilised to develop AI models aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment.
Earlier this week, Hims & Hers also announced Nader Kabbani, a former Amazon executive, as its new Chief of Operations, demonstrating a broader commitment to innovation. The company currently serves between 10,000 and 15,000 patients daily, aiming to leverage its dataset to refine its AI capabilities further.
Two years ago, the firm created MedMatch, an AI model designed to assist healthcare professionals in recommending mental health treatments. While the AI plays a crucial role, Dudum emphasised that human oversight remains essential. AI tools are designed to serve as adjuncts, providing insights to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of healthcare providers’ decisions.
Dudum stressed the importance of transparency in AI recommendations, noting that it’s not just the output that matters, but also the rationale behind it. By revealing the underlying processes that inform recommendations, Hims & Hers aims to foster trust among healthcare professionals and patients alike.
