Many individuals find themselves juggling numerous applications for note-taking, schedule organization, and task management. So, why not streamline everything into a single app? This concept is at the core of Hero, a comprehensive productivity application featuring an AI assistant to enhance your experience.
The iOS application was conceptualized by Brad Kowalk and Seung W. Lee, former employees of Meta. The duo first crossed paths while collaborating on Facebook Stories, where Kowalk served as the product manager and Lee as an engineer. Kowalk continued his work on innovative AI projects at Meta until 2022.
“Following our departure from Meta, we were determined to create a new project that wouldn’t contribute to time wastage. Our goal was to build something that genuinely helps people save time,” Kowalk stated.
To date, the founders have secured $4 million in seed funding, attracting notable investors such as Instacart’s Max Mullen, Dropbox’s Arash Ferdowsi, Adobe’s Scott Belsky, Meta’s Ime Archibong, the musical group The Chainsmokers, and venture capital firms like Neo and Abstract.
Mullen, who initially connected with Hero’s founders through a prior investment, expressed admiration for their startup vision.
“Hero has a distinct vision to reshape the public perception of AI applications. I foresee an increase in consumer apps adopting voice interfaces and assistants reminiscent of Hero, aiming to become an indispensable everyday tool rather than relying on multiple apps,” he explained to TechCrunch during a call.

Mullen emphasized the app’s potential benefits for families and friend groups, as it can eliminate the need for multiple applications for effective coordination.
The platform features a user-friendly single-screen interface that displays your daily agenda, weather forecast, to-do list, grocery list, and notes. At the top, there’s a daily overview styled like Instagram Stories, featuring your schedule, news highlights, and an inspiring quote.
Users can invite others—friends, family, or colleagues—to view shared calendars, tasks, and notes. Those on the app can engage with shared events or tasks through comments. Currently, for those not using the app, to-do lists can be shared in a message-friendly format.
With the help of the integrated AI assistant, you can swiftly create events, reminders, notes, or add items to your grocery list. The assistant utilizes Perplexity’s AI to respond to your questions, enabling you to save web searches directly as notes.
Additionally, the assistant can help you compile lists or notes. For example, if you create a note titled “Movies such as Challengers” and hit the suggestion button, the app will generate a relevant list.

Kowalk is optimistic that the surge of AI tools will eventually lead users to rely on fewer apps, moving away from the necessity of using multiple calendar, reminder, note, and weather applications.
“In the near future, I anticipate two types of applications will dominate: open-ended chat applications like ChatGPT or Google Gemini, and apps designed to display your day comprehensively. Our goal is to be that all-in-one application that seamlessly integrates your day’s activities while collaborating with your circles, enhanced with intelligent features,” Kowalk added.
He noted that switching between various apps may lead to forgetting tasks, often resulting in users opening social media instead. Kowalk identified couples and recent college graduates seeking a new approach to productivity as primary demographics for this app, preferring it over traditional options like Google Calendar.
The app is currently available at no cost, with plans to maintain its free status.
Users are also able to tap the Instacart icon within the grocery list to browse and order items directly, with the company receiving a commission from these transactions.
Kowalk shared that monetization strategies will primarily revolve around this grocery integration in the future.
Hero is actively enhancing voice interactions with the assistant, while also developing a habit and goal-tracking tool, along with capabilities to add events, tasks, and notes via images or screenshots.
