Expanding from its original trio of founders (Sylvestre, CTO Max Liben, and COO Eric Maciolek), H3X now operates with a tightly-knit team of 33 individuals, arguably leaner than one might expect.
H3X specializes in electric motors – distinct from complete powertrains that you’d find in electric vehicles or aircraft. Their motors serve as the crucial component that converts electrical energy into mechanical power, typically to rotate a driveshaft.
The standout feature of H3X’s products is their impressive power output relative to their small size. H3X, however, has significantly reduced these limitations.
To put it into perspective, imagine replacing an electric motor the size of a dishwasher with an H3X motor the size of a microwave, without sacrificing performance. This innovation is critical in fields where space and weight are premium considerations, such as in drones and small aircraft.
Sylvestre highlights that while their smaller motors have been well-received, a recent $20 million investment is set to propel the development of their megawatt-scale motors, potentially transforming the industry.

“We envision establishing a pioneering, market-leading product that will revolutionize the aerospace and marine sectors,” Sylvestre explained to TechCrunch. He detailed the compact size of their megawatt motor, capable of fitting within a small room, contrasting sharply with current large-scale alternatives.
For context, a megawatt motor can power a small passenger plane, showcasing the level of interest H3X is receiving for hybrid electric aircraft. These advanced power systems offer the advantages of electric propulsion without the limitations of existing battery technology.

H3X motors offer versatility, functioning both as motors and generators, which streamlines hybrid systems. This capability allows engines and motors to operate at optimum efficiency, a feature already utilized in some marine diesel-electric systems. The possibility to add multiple units for scalability further enhances their appeal.
“Utilizing conventional megawatt-scale generators would render aircraft too heavy for practical flight. However, our stackable units can support larger aircraft designs, with potential applications in commercial aviation for planes seating up to 100 passengers,” Sylvestre noted.
The company has garnered attention across the aerospace, marine, and military sectors, powering a diverse array of vehicles and equipment – from drones and ships to undisclosed projects that remain classified.

The maritime industry, in particular, shows promise for H3X’s innovations, as there’s a strong push towards decarbonization and minimizing dependence on traditional diesel engines. The significant power output and compact design of H3X motors are highly advantageous for this sector.
Even industries reliant on large generators for power see the benefits of H3X’s technology, with its straightforward maintenance and reduced physical footprint.
While the development of megawatt-scale motors is ongoing, H3X has already begun generating significant revenue, with projections indicating substantial growth in the coming years, aiming for profitability by 2026.
The recent funding of $20 million will aid in expanding their team and facilities to fulfill existing contracts and push forward with their innovative megawatt units, potentially opening up new market opportunities.
Led by Infinite Capital among other contributors – including participation from Hanwha AM, Cubit Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures – the investment round underscores a growing confidence in H3X’s direction towards electrification in shipping and regional air travel. As the industry evolves, H3X stands out as a significant driver of change, paving the way for advancements in legacy sectors.
