Google’s Nest Thermostat Continues to Outpace Competitors in Smart Home Climate Control

Upon moving into my new home last month, the first addition I made was a renovated third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat. Having spent years in New York City apartments, I was intrigued by how such a device became a cornerstone of Google’s move into hardware.

Admittedly, my purchase timing could have been improved, especially with the introduction of the fourth-gen model. Yet, as a financial consultant advised me before finalizing my home purchase, “the optimal time to purchase a home was last year.” Waiting for the perfect opportunity means waiting indefinitely.

This particularly harsh summer has deepened my appreciation for the Nest. However, opting for a second-hand model off eBay presented challenges, primarily its unreliable Wi-Fi connection. Yet, the confidence boost that came from installing it myself was unparalleled.

Extended apartment living can lead to second-guessing one’s basic competencies. However, on a blistering mid-July day, I switched off the electricity, dismantled the outdated digital thermostat, and installed the Nest, surprisingly without injuring myself or damaging the device, despite occasional Wi-Fi issues.

Following the thermostat replacement, I successfully completed a few other minor electrical tasks without harm. When the new Nest version was delivered, I quickly set it up and operational within minutes, thankfully without incident. Of course, how straightforward this process feels can vary based on several factors, such as the compatibility of your HVAC system.

For me, installation was a breeze: turning off the power, removing the old unit, disconnecting wires, swapping out the mounting plates, and securing the new model in place was straightforward. The Google Home app provided step-by-step guidance. Once connected to my home’s Wi-Fi—successfully this time—it was ready to be used.

The latest generation introduced an additional component—a secondary sensor resembling a pebble. This can be situated on any flat surface or wall-mounted away from the thermostat to better gauge the home’s overall temperature. While you have the option to add more sensors, my relatively compact house means one is sufficient for me.

Furthermore, the updated thermostat boasts a feature that displays the current outdoor weather conditions. This information, combined with that from the primary and any additional sensors, enables the system to optimize comfort without excessive energy use. Google offers examples, like pausing heating on sun-warmed winter days or adjusting the temperature on humid days to maintain comfort.

At its core, the Nest Learning Thermostat uses AI to process collected data, learn from your habits, and adapt accordingly to maintain your preferred temperature range. While it’s too soon for a conclusive review, the promise of its effectiveness grows with time.

Immediately noticeable is its aesthetically pleasing design—a trait consistent with its predecessors—setting a new standard for how thermostats can complement home decor. The design influence of Nest’s founders, with backgrounds at Apple, is evident, transforming the thermostat into the home’s equivalent of an iPod, complete with a scrolling interface.

The new model’s display is a significant upgrade, being 60% larger and stretching from edge to edge, creating a visually striking profile. This enhanced display now supports a proximity sensor, activating to show various screens like clocks, weather updates, or essential thermostat details as someone approaches.

Positioned opposite the entrance, the thermostat catches the eye upon entering my house, showcasing its blend of functionality and decorative appeal. Although it isn’t a full-fledged smart display, it provides useful information in passing.

The Nest Learning Thermostat continues to impress with its sleek industrial design, integrating perfectly with modern smart home aesthetics. Its signature rotating interface remains, providing a satisfying tactile feedback appreciated by many.

As Google aims to revitalize its smart home lineup with AI-powered offerings, revisiting the product that kicked off its smart home journey seems fitting. While the fourth-generation thermostat may not revolutionize the category, it proves its worth amidst stiff competition.

Priced at $280, it represents a significant investment in a device that wasn’t much of a consideration a decade ago. Yet, it’s an investment that I’m not planning to replace any time soon.
