Google has announced an update for its Gemini chatbot app that now allows users to edit both AI-generated images and those uploaded from personal devices. The new image editing feature will be gradually accessible to users across more than 45 languages and various countries starting today.
This development follows Google’s earlier pilot of an AI image editing model within its AI Studio platform, which gained attention for its ability to remove watermarks from images. Gemini’s updated native image editor is expected to outperform standalone AI image generators in terms of effectiveness and versatility.
The newly integrated “multi-step” editing process enables users to receive more nuanced responses to their commands, seamlessly combining text and images. Users can perform a variety of edits such as changing image backgrounds, adding or replacing objects, and incorporating new elements directly within the platform.
Google offers practical examples of how Gemini can be used creatively. For instance, users can upload a personal photo and ask Gemini to visualise themselves with different hairstyles, or request it to draft a bedtime story involving dragons, accompanied by relevant images.
However, the potential for misuse in creating deepfake content raises concerns. To mitigate this risk, Google states that images produced or modified through Gemini will include an invisible watermark, although a visible watermark is not yet in place. The company has indicated that it is considering introducing a visible watermark on all outputs from Gemini to enhance transparency.
This innovative iteration of Gemini reflects ongoing efforts by Google to leverage artificial intelligence in enhancing creative processes while being mindful of the ethical implications associated with image editing technologies.
