Google’s AI Search Usage Is Increasing, and It’s Intentional

by admin

Google has been trialling AI-driven summary capabilities in its Search function, known as AI Overviews, for two years, and the initiative is steadily broadening to encompass new regions and languages. The company claims notable success with over 1.5 billion users monthly across more than 100 countries utilising this feature.

AI Overviews aggregates web content to succinctly address user inquiries. For example, a search for “What is generative AI?” yields AI-generated summaries at the top of the search results. While this feature has reportedly reduced traffic to certain publishers, Google views it, alongside its other AI-based search functions, as important avenues for revenue generation and enhanced user engagement.

In October of the previous year, Google introduced advertisements in AI Overviews. Furthermore, it is currently trialling an AI Mode that allows users to pose intricate queries and follow-up questions seamlessly within Google Search, positioning itself against chat-based search systems like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

During its Q1 2025 earnings update, Google showcased the expansion of its additional AI-centred search offerings, including Circle to Search. This feature enables users to highlight content on their smartphone screens and pose related questions, and it is now accessible on over 250 million devices, an increase from approximately 200 million late last year. Google reported a near 40% rise in Circle to Search usage quarter-on-quarter.

Moreover, the company noted that visual search functionalities are experiencing consistent growth. According to CEO Sundar Pichai, search queries via Google Lens, its multimodal AI search technology, have surged by 5 billion since October, with over a 10% increase in shopping activity on the platform in Q1.

This growth occurs amid stringent regulatory scrutiny of Google’s search operations. The U.S. Department of Justice has urged Google to divest Chrome due to a ruling that recognised the company’s illegal monopoly in online search. Additionally, a federal judge determined that Google holds a monopoly in the ad tech sector, raising the possibility of a corporate breakup.

In summary, Google’s advancements in AI search technology illustrate both its commitment to enhancing user experience and the challenges posed by regulatory pressures.
