Google is broadening the reach of its AI Mode, an innovative tool that enables users to engage in complex, multi-part inquiries directly within its Search function. Originally launched in March to compete with platforms such as Perplexity AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search, this feature is receiving several enhancements to boost its functionality.
With the latest updates, the waitlist for AI Mode has been lifted, allowing all U.S. users aged 18 and over to access the feature if they are enrolled in Google Labs, the company’s experimental division. Furthermore, Google is trialling an AI Mode tab in Search, which will be visible to a select group of users, making the feature accessible beyond the Labs environment.
The newly introduced capabilities allow users to delve deeper into a variety of topics, from discovering restaurants to planning trips. AI Mode now includes visual cards for places and products, providing users with easy access to more detailed information. For example, when searching for local dining establishments or services, you can view important information like ratings, reviews, and opening hours. For product inquiries, users can view real-time prices, promotions, images, and stock information.
AI Mode is designed for practical applications; for instance, if you search for vintage shops offering mid-century modern furniture, the tool can pinpoint nearby locations, share live updates on foot traffic, and even provide direct phone numbers or directions. Similarly, if you’re gearing up for a camping adventure, you may query “best foldable camping chair under $100,” and AI Mode will offer a curated list of products with complete details and links to purchase.
An additional feature allows users to track their search history within AI Mode. This function is particularly beneficial for ongoing projects, as it enables users to revisit previous searches easily. On desktop devices, a dedicated panel allows quick access to past queries, making it simple to retrieve earlier data and pose follow-up questions.
Through these enhancements, Google aims to enhance user experience significantly by providing more streamlined access to information and support for complex inquiries, establishing itself more firmly in the competitive landscape of AI-driven search solutions.
