Google Wallet Expands Support for Digital IDs Across Additional States

by admin

On Tuesday, Google made a significant announcement regarding the expansion of digital IDs and services within Google Wallet. Residents in several states, including Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia, will soon have the ability to store government-issued digital IDs in Google Wallet. Users in Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico can also leverage their mobile IDs at DMV locations.

As the REAL ID deadline of May 7, 2025, approaches, Google emphasized that while users can create an ID Pass using a U.S. passport for TSA security during domestic travel, it does not serve as a substitute for a physical ID. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep the actual ID on hand.

Beyond travel, the digital ID functionality will enable users to recover their Amazon accounts, gain access to healthcare services such as CVS and MyChart by Epic, and verify their profiles on various platforms, including Uber. Additionally, residents of the U.K. will soon have the option to create digital ID passes using their passports, storing them securely in Google Wallet.

In addressing the need for privacy-focused age verification, Google is integrating zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology into Google Wallet. This development aims to provide swift age verification without compromising user privacy across mobile devices, applications, and websites using Google’s digital credential API. Google plans to collaborate with apps like Bumble, allowing these platforms to utilise Google Wallet’s digital IDs for identity verification while using ZKP for age checks. Furthermore, Google intends to make its ZKP technology available as open source, which could enhance other wallets and online services.

Insights into the upcoming global expansion indicate that Google Wallet will soon be available in 50 more countries, although a detailed list of these countries has not yet been disclosed.

This move marks an essential step in enhancing security and convenience for users who rely on digital IDs, signifying Google’s commitment to advancing digital identity solutions while prioritizing user privacy. As the technology landscape evolves, such innovations could reshape how personal identification and verification processes are handled across various sectors.
