At Google I/O 2025, Google revealed its plans to rival Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses by announcing partnerships with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop smart glasses powered by the Android XR platform. This initiative follows the launch of Android XR, which Google unveiled in collaboration with Qualcomm and Samsung last year, signalling the company’s intention to create a range of eyewear and headsets in conjunction with various partners.
During the event, Google elaborated on an expanded collaboration with Samsung, aimed at integrating hardware and software solutions for XR glasses. This partnership emerged from a mixed-reality initiative announced in 2023, which led to Samsung’s introduction of Project Moohan, a headset expected to launch later this year.
Google showcased concept smart glasses that utilise the Android XR platform enhanced with its Gemini AI. The features of these glasses include a camera, a microphone, and speakers similar to those in the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Notably, these glasses also incorporate an optional display on the lens to show notifications.
During the I/O presentation, Google demonstrated various functionalities of the concept glasses, which encompassed messaging, turn-by-turn navigation, appointment scheduling, live language translation, and photography. To refine their product further, Google plans to distribute units to select testers for valuable feedback.
