On Monday, Google discreetly launched an innovative dictation app named “Google AI Edge Eloquent” specifically for iOS, positioning itself against competitors like Wispr Flow and SuperWhisper. This offline-first application is free to download, and after users acquire its Gemma-based automatic speech recognition models, they can initiate dictation on their devices.
The app features real-time transcription capabilities, with an automatic filtering function that removes filler words such as "um" and "ah" when users pause their speech, producing polished text. Users can also transform their transcriptions into various formats, including “Key points,” “Formal,” “Short,” and “Long,” providing versatility in text presentation.
Additionally, the app allows users to toggle between local-only processing and cloud-based services for text enhancement. When cloud mode is activated, it utilises advanced Gemini models from the cloud. Notably, Google AI Edge Eloquent can import specific terms, names, and jargon from users’ Gmail accounts, thereby personalising the dictation experience. There’s also the option to add custom vocabulary.
The application keeps track of transcription history, enabling users to review previous sessions and search through dictated words. It provides insights such as the number of words spoken and the user’s dictation speed.
Describing the app, Google’s App Store listing highlights its capability to produce clear, ready-to-use text, significantly reducing unwanted interruptions in speech. The emphasis lies on capturing the essence of spoken words without the distractions of verbal pauses, enhancing the overall dictation quality.
Currently, Google AI Edge Eloquent is exclusive to iOS; however, its App Store description hints at future Android availability. Users are promised seamless Android integration, with potential features like setting the app as a default keyboard and access via a floating button for transcription on various platforms.
As the demand for AI-driven transcription tools rises alongside improvements in speech-to-text technologies, Google’s entry into this space signifies a notable trend. Should this experimental app prove successful, it could lead to enhancements in transcription features across other Google products, particularly on Android.
