On Wednesday, Google unveiled its highly awaited flagship AI model, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, as part of a broader release of AI models. Alongside this, the company is also launching its reasoning model, Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, within the Gemini app.
Significantly, Google’s rollout occurs in a tech landscape captivated by the affordable AI reasoning solutions provided by the Chinese startup DeepSeek. DeepSeek’s offerings are reported to either match or exceed the capabilities of top-tier AI models from leading American tech firms while being accessible via an economical API.
Both Google and DeepSeek debuted AI reasoning models in December, though DeepSeek’s R1 garnered significantly more attention. Google may be attempting to enhance the visibility of its Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model through its widely-used Gemini app.
Regarding Gemini 2.0 Pro, the new model is positioned as the successor to the Gemini 1.5 Pro, which was released by Google last February. The company asserts that it now leads the lineup of models in the Gemini AI family.
Around a week ago, Google mistakenly revealed the launch of the Gemini 2.0 Pro in the changelog of the Gemini app. However, this announcement is official. On Wednesday, the company is rolling out an experimental version of this model across its AI development tools, Vertex AI and Google AI Studio, with availability for Gemini Advanced subscribers in the Gemini app.
According to Google, the newly introduced Gemini Pro model excels in coding and managing intricate prompts, demonstrating a superior understanding and reasoning capacity of world knowledge compared to its predecessors. It is capable of utilizing tools such as Google Search and executing code on users’ behalf.
Gemini 2.0 Pro features a context window of 2 million tokens, allowing it to process approximately 1.5 million words in a single query. To put this in perspective, the latest AI model from Google could absorb the entire seven-book series of Harry Potter within one prompt and still have around 400,000 words available.
Additionally, Google is releasing the Gemini 2.0 Flash model to the public on Wednesday. Initially announced in December, this model is now accessible to all users of the Gemini app.
In a bid to compete with the buzz surrounding DeepSeek’s offerings, Google is also launching a new, more economically efficient AI model, Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite. The company claims this model outperforms its predecessor, Gemini 1.5 Flash, while maintaining the same pricing and speed.
