Google has subtly modified its web page dedicated to the Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology (RAI-HCT) team. This group is responsible for exploring aspects of AI safety, fairness, and explainability. The updates include the removal of terms like “diversity” and “equity.”
In the prior version of the site, the RAI-HCT team’s work was described using phrases such as “marginalized communities,” “diverse,” “underrepresented groups,” and “equity.” These terms have now been eliminated or, in some instances, replaced with vaguer words like “all,” “varied,” and “numerous,” instead of “diverse.”
Google has not yet responded to inquiries for further information.

Change: Removed references to diversity and equity from the description of their Responsible AI team. pic.twitter.com/i9VvBcHMQ6— The Midas Project Watchtower (@SafetyChanges) March 8, 2025
These developments were uncovered by The Midas Project, a watchdog organization, following similar changes on Google’s Startups Founders Fund grant website. Earlier in February, the company announced plans to abolish its diversity hiring goals while examining its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Google is not alone; many major tech firms have begun to scale back their DEI strategies in light of actions from the Trump Administration, which has labeled these practices as “illegal.” Companies like Amazon and Meta have also retracted DEI efforts recently, and OpenAI has eliminated references to diversity and inclusion from its hiring practices webpage. In contrast, Apple has recently opposed a shareholder initiative aimed at terminating its DEI programs.
Many of these organizations, including Google, maintain contracts with federal agencies.
