Google Presents 2024: Anticipating the Pixel 9, Gemini, a Fresh Foldable, and More Highlights from the Upcoming Event

by admin

Mark your calendars for Google’s upcoming major hardware unveiling, scheduled for August 13 at 10 a.m. PT. Breaking from tradition, the Made By Google event gets a two-month jump on its usual mid-autumn timeline. Importantly, this event will be the stage for introducing the new flagship Pixel 9, getting ahead of the iPhone 16, which is expected to be announced in September by Apple.

The reasoning behind Google’s decision to move the event up remains unexplained. It might be to avoid the clutter of media attention nearing the already tumultuous U.S. presidential election. Additionally, Google seems eager to discuss advancements related to Gemini, likely introducing revolutionary generative AI features for its devices before any other Android contenders.

One habit Google is continuing is revealing devices pre-event. While this strategy might diminish the surprise factor, it effectively builds anticipation during the quieter summer period for consumer electronics. In July, Google unveiled two top-of-the-line devices: the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Fold.

Additionally, this Tuesday, Google announced an update to the original Nest Learning Thermostat—The Nest Learning Thermostat 4, arriving 13 years after the first version and almost ten years following the third iteration. The latest Google TV Streamer set-top box was also introduced.

Introducing Phones for “the Gemini Era”

Adorned with the tagline “A (foldable) phone built for the Gemini era,” these devices herald a new chapter in AI-integrated tech events spearheaded by Google. At the May Google I/O event, Gemini was a focal point, setting the stage for Google’s ambitious AI endeavors.

In a strategic move to separate its consumer hardware from the developer-centric discussions, Google announced the budget-friendly Pixel 8a just days before the event. Interestingly, this year’s most captivating Android AI feature, Circle to Search, wasn’t introduced on a Pixel device but on Samsung’s Galaxy S24 in January.

Apple, too, made its entry into the AI arena with the unveiling of Apple Intelligence at WWDC in June, forming strategic alliances with both Google and OpenAI to bolster its generative AI capabilities.

Adopting a minimalist approach, Apple focuses on performing tasks on-device, similar to Google’s direction with Gemini Nano, a compact AI model integrated into Pixel devices recently.

Google has been vocal about its plans to elevate the Pixel series from its position as a secondary option within the Android ecosystem, partly through the development of its in-house mobile chips. With the addition of Gemini, could this be the turning point for Pixel’s ascendance?

Unveiling the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Earlier this week, Google teased the Pixel 9 Pro with a video prominently featuring Gemini’s capabilities, showcasing a humorous request to the AI for composing a “breakup letter” with an old phone in favor of the Pixel 9 Pro, highlighted by an impressive camera bar design.

The teaser for the forthcoming foldable model shared similar themes, with a playful nod to AI interaction and a distinctive, off-center camera setup.

Opting for the name “Pixel 9 Pro Fold,” Google indicates a more integrated approach within the base Pixel lineup, proposing it as the superior model despite a price hike with the previous generation’s release, yet still undercutting competitors like Samsung and Apple.

Google plans to debut four Pixel variants, each powered by the latest Tensor G4 chip and running on Android 15, promising cutting-edge technology and innovation across the board.

The Debut of Android 15

Following the recent release of Android 14’s beta, the full reveal of Android 15 is eagerly awaited at the August 13 event. Codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream,” this version is set to introduce enhanced multitasking capabilities, satellite connectivity, and other significant updates.

Future Prospects for Google Assistant

The integration of Gemini raises questions about Google Assistant’s role, yet it’s clear Google is aiming for a seamless blend rather than a complete replacement, potentially revitalizing interest in smart home technologies.

Spotlight on The Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2

Despite the cooling trend in smart home gadgets, Google remains committed to its wearable tech lineup, hinting at exciting updates for the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2 at the forthcoming event.
