Google has announced new features aimed at enhancing user contributions to Maps, making it simpler for individuals to share local knowledge. One standout addition is Gemini, a tool that generates captions automatically when users upload photos or videos related to specific locations.
When users select a photo for sharing, Gemini analyses the image and suggests a relevant caption, which can be edited or discarded by the user. Currently, this captioning feature is available in English on iOS in the U.S., with plans for a global rollout and integration with Android devices in the upcoming months.
Additionally, Google is streamlining the media-sharing process. If users enable media access for Google Maps on their devices, they can easily access recent photos and videos in the “Contribute” tab. From there, sharing becomes a straightforward task, fostering community engagement.
Google emphasises the importance of shared media, stating that photos and videos enhance the understanding of a place, providing insight into its atmosphere or offerings, like menus. To facilitate sharing, Google has now made photo and video recommendations accessible to users globally on both iOS and Android platforms.
Another significant update is the introduction of a feature allowing contributors to track the impact of their submissions. Users can now view the total points they have accrued within the “Contribute” section. Moreover, “Local Guide” levels will now be showcased on user profiles, acknowledging contributions such as photo uploads, reviews, and factual checks that improve the accuracy and richness of Google Maps.
Google has also refreshed its achievement badges, allowing contributors to be identified as “expert fact-finders,” “master photographers,” or “rising novices.” High-level contributors will be highlighted with new gold profiles, making it easier to recognise their contribution levels.
These enhancements are part of Google’s effort to support its extensive community of over 500 million contributors who play a vital role in maintaining accurate and up-to-date information on Maps. By making the contribution process more accessible and user-friendly, Google aims to encourage more users to participate in sharing valuable insights on locations, thus enriching the overall efficacy of the platform.
