At the Google I/O 2025 event, the tech giant unveiled the expansion of Project Mariner, an advanced AI agent designed to interact with websites on behalf of users. Google’s significant update to Project Mariner allows it to tackle nearly twelve tasks simultaneously, enhancing efficiency and multitasking capabilities.
Available to U.S. subscribers of Google’s premium AI Ultra plan for $249.99 per month, Project Mariner will soon extend its reach to additional countries. The technology will also integrate with the Gemini API and Vertex AI, providing developers with the tools to create applications leveraging this AI agent.
First introduced in late 2024, Project Mariner marks a transformative shift in how individuals use the internet. Rather than manually navigating websites, users can communicate directly with the AI agent to complete various transactions. For instance, users can easily buy concert tickets or groceries through a simple chat, as the AI autonomously handles the necessary actions online.
Project Mariner aims to compete with other experimental web-browsing AI agents, such as OpenAI’s Operator and Amazon’s Nova Act. Although these tools are still in their developmental phases, early feedback has indicated some shortcomings, including slow performance and errors. However, Google claims to have learned from initial testers, enhancing Project Mariner’s functionalities. It now operates on cloud-based virtual machines, allowing users to engage in other tasks while the AI runs in the background. This newfound ability to handle multitasking means users can efficiently juggle multiple projects without interruption—addressing one of the major criticisms of earlier versions that confined users to a single task.
Google plans to introduce Project Mariner in “AI Mode” as part of the upcoming AI-powered Google Search experience. Initially, this will be available through Search Labs, a testing platform for innovative search features. Collaborations with companies like Ticketmaster and StubHub are also in the works to facilitate seamless user transactions through the AI agent.
In a related development, Google presented a preview of another feature named “Agent Mode,” which integrates web browsing with research and other Google applications. This addition is set to be accessible for Ultra subscribers on desktop devices shortly.
