Google Introduces AI Summaries to Brazil, India, Japan, the UK, Indonesia, and Mexico

by admin

Google has announced the expansion of its AI-enhanced search summaries into six additional countries: India, Brazil, Japan, the U.K., Indonesia, and Mexico, complete with support for each country’s local languages. This broadening seeks to enrich the user experience with localized AI insights.

In an effort to refine its presentation of source references, Google is introducing a new feature whereby icons representing various sites will appear in the upper right corner above the AI-generated summaries on both desktop and mobile platforms. This allows users to directly access the sources mentioned within the AI summary by clicking on these icons, fostering deeper exploration of the subjects.

Furthermore, Google is experimenting with mechanisms for weaving relevant links directly into the AI summaries’ text, aiming to enhance traffic flow to external websites.

Google reports that the implementation of AI Summaries has significantly diversified the array of websites users visit for comprehensive answers to intricate queries. It has been observed that clicks originating from AI Summary-enhanced search result pages tend to lead to longer engagement periods on the websites visited, as disclosed by the company in a blog post.

Critiques have been leveled at AI-driven tools for their insufficient prominence of source links within summaries. Some news platforms have accused specific search tools like Perplexity AI of indulging in plagiarism and unethical web scraping practices. Perplexity’s Chief Business Officer, Dmitry Shevelenko, informed TechCrunch earlier this month that a substantial portion of their traffic stems from external link clicks, though Google has not yet disclosed any metrics regarding the traffic its AI summaries are generating.

India focus

With its latest update, Google has incorporated several features specifically designed for Indian users within its AI summaries. One notable feature tested earlier and retained for this rollout allows users to alternate between Hindi and English results seamlessly within the same interface.

Moreover, Indian users will have the option to listen to AI-generated responses by pressing a “Listen” button, acknowledging the higher propensity among this user base to engage with audio feedback.

During initial trials, it was noted that certain queries in Hindi encountered issues when there were changes made to the sentence structure or specific words. We have reached out to Google for further insight into their approach to addressing queries in Hindi and will provide updates upon receiving a response.
