Google Introduces a Silent AI Dictation App Capable of Offline Functionality

by admin

On April 7, 2023, Google introduced a new dictation app for iOS known as “Google AI Edge Eloquent.” Designed as an offline-first tool, it aims to compete with existing apps like Wispr Flow and SuperWhisper. Though initially referencing an Android version, the app’s listing has since been amended to focus solely on iOS, with an iOS keyboard planned for release soon.

The free app operates using advanced Gemma-based automatic speech recognition models, which users can download for initial use. Eloquent provides real-time transcription and filters out filler words—such as “um” and “ah”—upon pausing. It also features options to modify the text into different formats, including “Key points,” “Formal,” “Short,” and “Long.”

One of Eloquent’s essential functions is its ability to process speech locally, although users can choose to enable cloud mode for enhanced features powered by Google’s Gemini models. Users can also incorporate terminology from their Gmail accounts or input their own customised vocabulary.

The app maintains a history of transcription sessions, allowing users to revisit past entries and track metrics such as words spoken per minute. The company’s description emphasises that Eloquent enhances the dictation experience by effectively translating natural speech into polished text, automatically eliminating verbal stumbles and self-corrections.

Currently exclusive to iOS, the app’s potential Android version appears to promise seamless integration, enabling it to be set as the default keyboard for users. It’s also expected to feature a floating button, similar to Wispr Flow, allowing users to access transcription capabilities effortlessly.

As AI-driven transcription software becomes increasingly popular, Google’s foray into this space reflects growing consumer demand for advanced speech-to-text functionalities. If the initial rollout proves successful, it may set the stage for enhanced transcription features across Android devices in the future, making Eloquent a notable entry in the technology landscape.
